A Mother’s Vigil
Artist Carolyn Wolf
Acrylic on 20" x 24" Canvas
The garden is thick and green, a place to catch your breath, but the air feels heavy with a storm that hasn't hit yet.
In A Mother’s Vigil, the peace of meditation is thin. On the surface, she is still, but the back of her mind is full of the jagged noise from outside. You see the soft lines of the plants crashing into the cold, graffiti-scarred walls and the shadows of soldiers. Even in a quiet moment of prayer, you can still hear the boots and the steel.
She isn't just holding her child; she is a shield. It’s the hard reality of being a mother—knowing your heart is walking around outside your body, completely exposed. The birds are restless, just like that gut feeling a mother has that "safe" is never a guarantee.
This painting is a quiet protest. It’s about the tenderness we try to keep while bracing for a world we can't control. It asks a simple, tough question: How do we grow something beautiful when the machine is always casting a shadow over the flowers?
