Muertita
Muertita
Acrylic on Canvas
Born from a magical Halloween evening, Muertita captures the joyful spirit of my youngest daughter dressed as La Muerte from The Book of Life. Her costume—a charming and playful nod to this beloved character—brought smiles and delight to everyone who saw her. After an evening filled with laughter, sweet treats, and many photo requests, she gently removed her hat, revealing flowing hair and makeup that sparked the vision for this painting.
Filled with vibrant colors and the festive energy of Día de los Muertos, this piece celebrates childhood wonder and the rich cultural traditions that surround this special day. Muertita shines with a joyful lightness, blending imagination, celebration, and the simple magic of a treasured moment.
Halloween and Día de los Muertos are often mentioned together but are very different celebrations. Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, is rooted in spooky traditions like costumes, trick-or-treating, and playful scares. In contrast, Día de los Muertos, observed on November 1st and 2nd, is a heartfelt Mexican holiday honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed away, filled with vibrant altars, colorful decorations, and joyful celebrations of life and memory.
