Roots of Grace is a deeply personal, original portrait celebrating the quiet power, enduring beauty, and deep ancestral presence of New Mexican women. Painted directly from the heart, this piece utilizes a photo of the artist's mother in her youth as the central model and muse.

In life, my mother has no tattoos and would never wear black lipstick. Yet, through everything she has overcome, survived, and endured, she embodies the very spirit of the Black Lipstick Army, a representation of raw strength, vitality, and tenacity.

Set against a backdrop of traditional adobe architecture, soft desert foliage, and distant mountain ranges under the open Southwest sky, she stands as a bridge between past and present. From the soft light reflecting off her dark braided hair to the cross pendants resting at her chest, every detail honors generations of faith, endurance, and survival.

While the spirit of this land extends back beyond recorded history, documented family records trace this lineage in Nuevo México back to 1730—decades before the founding of the United States. Roots of Grace serves as a visual testament to nearly three centuries of memory, identity, and deep-rooted heritage woven straight into this desert landscape.
